Terrific Tuesday - Love my Scraps Mystery Quilt I, Part Three

I know you are all anxious to get started. So here we go.
My blocks will be 10 1/2" square before I sew them to each other.
I will be using the quilt as you go method (my first one).
Use a walking foot if you have one.
NOTE WHEN I GIVE YOU LENGTHS FOR A STRIP PLEASE MEASURE YOUR SPACE FIRST. WE ALL HAVE DIFFERENT SEAM ALLOWANCES.

Steps for Block A.
This is what Block A will look like when you finish the steps below. It will be pieced and quilted.
Remember you can vary the center squares by adding more squares on top, or turning them wonky.

 

This is the block after I added more squares for embellishment.

The options are endless. What are yours.

And yes you can do this.

 

1. Cut a 14" square piece of batting. If you are better than I am you can cut this piece smaller . I may later as I give this a technique a try. Open it up.
2. Cut a backing piece of fabric the same size as the batting (i'm sure later I'll learn to make this a little smaller).Place the backing fabric front side donw on the table. Lay the batting on top. Pin

3.  Take a 6 1/2" square and a 3 1/2" square and fold them in fourth to find their centers.
Place the 6 1/2" square in the middle of the batting. Place the 3 1/2" square in the middle of the 6 1/2" square. Pin.

4. Now to start sewing strips to flip and quilt. Start on the right side of the 6 1/2" block add a  

 2 1/2" strip x 6 1/2" strip place it right sides together and sew to the right side.

 

5. Take a 2 1/2" strip x 6 1/2" and place it right sides together on the right side of this block.

Sew 1/4" seam . Press open.

6. After you press this open I sewed a zig zag stitch over the seam of the red and green fabrics to "quilt it" to the batting.

7. Add the next strip along the bottom cut at 2 1/2" x 8 1/2" place right sides together and sew 1/4"

8. Press open and zig zag or decorative stitch near or over the seam to quilt it to the block .seam.

9. Add the next strip on the left 2 1/2" x 9 " place right sides together and sew 1/4" seam allowanc

10. Press open and zig zag or decorative stitch  to quilt it to the block as before.                          

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 12. Another side to go, Cut a strip 2 1/2" x 101/2" sew it to the top with 1/4".

13. Press open and use a zig zag or decorative stitch to quilt it to the block.

 

 

 

 

14. Now trim the block to the desired size or 10 1/2" x 10 1/2"

 

 

Block A complete and quilted !
